We appreciate your interest in Camp Androscoggin and your desire to work at a summer camp. We believe that camp offers children a great opportunity to gain self-confidence, make friends and, most importantly, have fun. We also feel that the camp environment offers staff the chance to have both a rewarding and enjoyable summer. A camp staff position however, is not for everybody. Please read through our staff information and decide if Camp Androscoggin is right for you. Then, fill out our online application and we will contact you. We are proud of the facilities and program at Androscoggin. However, no single element is more important than our staff. The success of the upcoming season is directly related to the quality of our counselors. Therefore, we encourage you to read the information here carefully and consider whether this is the type of summer job you would be interested in. Description of Responsibilities: If you havent done so already, please browse through our online brochure.
Activities Each staff member is a specialist who teaches one of the activities Androscoggin offers. Campers travel to activities with other boys from their age group and, over the course of the summer, are scheduled for every activity in the program. Consequently, each staff member will work with every age group and ability level. As skill development and exposure to new activities are key elements to our program, it is important that staff members have experience in their particular area. As important as ones competence or experience, however, are enthusiasm and a desire to teach. The activities offered at Androscoggin include: tennis, baseball, soccer, basketball, lacrosse, hockey, archery, riflery, arts and crafts, pottery, woodworking, animation, nature and camp craft, ropes, radio, video, dramatics, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing, fishing, sailing and water-skiing. Androscoggin also offers an extensive day and overnight tripping program in addition to the on-campus activities. Bunks Each of our male counselors has responsibilities for a bunk and lives in a cabin with 5 or 6 boys. While the amount of time spent in the cabin is not as great as time at an activity, a counselors efforts in the bunk are perhaps his most important and potentially rewarding. The bunk is both a camper and counselors home for eight weeks. The rapport a camper develops with his bunk counselor is one of the key ingredients in the success of everyones summer.
Dates and Time Off The contractual period for staff runs from Thursday, June 19th to Saturday, August 16th. While the campers do not arrive until June 26th, the staff assembles for an orientation program on the 19th. This week together enables us to explain the logistics of the daily program, discuss the philosophy of the camp and talk a little about what to expect once camp begins. It also gives the staff a chance to relax and get to know each other before the boys arrive. As for time-off during the season, each counselor has 4 days off during the summer and is off duty every other evening. We expect a lot from our staff when they are on duty and recognize the need for ample time away from camp in order to do a good job throughout the summer. Camp Philosophy
To summarize, we try to create an environment in which every camper can improve their skills, gain an increased sense of independence and self-esteem and form strong and lasting friendships. Camp offers a setting in which campers can learn and grow and have a great time in the process. We also believe it offers staff members a unique opportunity to work with children and have a positive impact on their development. Its a lot of work, a lot of fun and, we believe a very satisfying way to spend a summer. We hope you agree and look forward to hearing from you. Peter & Roberta Hirsch email: staff@campandro.com |
