In 1907, Edward Healy and his wife, Katherine, founded Camp Androscoggin. Mr. Healy, an educator from New York City, wanted to create a summer program for boys “designed with the idea that outdoor life, filled with healthful recreation, and the acquisition of accomplishments like swimming, canoeing, sailing, and athletics… would contribute to his mental well-being.”
The first summer, with just seven boys and three staff, took place on Sans Souci (now called Senior Island), which is just a ten-minute canoe ride from our current waterfront. The boys spent the summer in what Mr. Healy described as “the nation’s playground, with the boy and nature in perfect accord.”
For thirty years, the Healys worked to turn this vision into reality. By 1937, the increasing number of younger campers led to the establishment of a second campus on “the mainland”, known as Junior Camp, which was led by longtime Island staff member Pat Wack and his wife until 1963.
In 1964, Stanley and Barbara Hirsch purchased Junior Camp, partnering with Boris to continue the program and tradition built by the Healy’s, providing a summer home where boys could make lifelong friends, learn new skills, and have summers to remember in the Maine outdoors. Beginning in 1973, the Junior and Senior campuses were combined on the mainland, creating the framework of the Camp Androscoggin we know today. Their vision and dedication helped Androscoggin grow from 7 campers in its inaugural summer to the 250 boys aged 8 to 15 who now call Andro their summer home.
Stanley and Barbara’s son, Peter, began his journey as a camper when his parents purchased Junior Camp. Peter came back to work at the camp, first as a counselor in 1974 and later as a co-director with his parents in 1985. In 1994, Roberta joined Peter as an owner and director of Androscoggin.
Peter and Roberta’s children, Kaden, Adam, and James, grew up spending their summers at Androscoggin. When they were of age, Adam and James attended as campers. Continuing in their fathers’ footsteps, all three worked at Androscoggin as counselors. Adam has continued to work at camp, joining Peter and Roberta as a full-time staff member in the fall of 2026.
