Harassement Policy

Androscoggin is committed to creating and maintaining a work environment in which all individuals are treated with respect and are free from discrimination and harassment.

Discrimination or harassment, whether on the basis of sex and sexual orientation (including sexual preference, gender identity and gender expression), race, color, religion, or national origin, age or disability is in violation of this policy as well as the Maine Human Rights Act and federal law.

Examples of conduct prohibited by this policy include using racial or ethnic slurs, making  offensive references to stereotypes, or making jokes about characteristics protected by law.  Any such harassment is prohibited by this policy whether or not the conduct also violates federal or state law.

Sexual harassment is defined as deliberate or repeated unsolicited comments, gestures, physical  contact, or other actions of a sexual nature that are unsolicited and unwelcome.

Behavior that is sexual in nature may be verbal, such as comments about a person’s looks, personal inquiries, and sexual jokes, use of derogatory sexual stereotypes, writing sexual notes or  requests for sexual favors. It also may be nonverbal such as staring at someone’s body,  deliberately blocking a person’s path or making sexual gestures. Sexual harassment may be  physical such as massaging, touching, deliberate brushing up against someone, hugging, and  pinching, grabbing or sexual contact.

Whether a behavior is considered unwelcome is determined by the recipient or by others  offended by the behavior, not by the person who is exhibiting the behavior.

If you believe you are a victim of any form of harassment or observe harassment, you are  encouraged to immediately discuss your concerns with a group leader or one of the directors,  Peter or Roberta. Complaints of harassment do not need to be in writing. However, in order for  the Camp to properly investigate the report, it may not be anonymous. It is the policy of the  Camp that no reprisal, retaliation, or other adverse action will be taken against any person for  making a good faith report of harassment or for assisting in an investigation of any allegation.
